Aberdeen has become the first city in Scotland to get full fibre broadband to nearly all homes and businesses. William Newton, President & EMEA MD at WiredScore, on what this news means for the future of Scotland’s digital landscape.

William Newton (right)  President & EMEA MD of  WiredScore observes “Scotland’s digital sector is growing at a staggering rate, and is forecast to grow more than twice as fast as the overall Scottish economy in the years up to 2024. This rapid growth is putting considerable demand on the country’s digital resources. Understanding the investment needed to support the forecast growth, the Scottish Government has in the recent budget outlined its goal to deliver super fast broadband for every business and household in Scotland by 2021

“That said, while universal super fast coverage is an important improvement, the digital strategy outlined in the Budget does not go far enough to deliver the connectivity that modern businesses truly need. Full fibre internet is becoming increasingly critical to organisations that require high upload speeds, as well as download speeds, to take advantage of cloud applications and services.

“The roll out by CityFibre and Vodafone is a great example of the essential role private organisations are playing in providing fit for purpose connectivity to Scottish businesses - and across the UK. However to make a true impact, it’s imperative that all players in providing digital infrastructure to businesses – central and local government, Communications Service Providers and landlords alike –  work together to deliver a seamless, high quality connectivity that will attract businesses and support growth.”
