Whose got Big Ambition then?

Some 32 companies have grouped together in the launch of Big Ambition Scotland website which takes place at Microsoft on Wedesday. Actually there's another BigAmbition but it is a co.uk site. The reason for a BigAmbition Scotland site? Simple. 400,000 new IT professionals are needed over the next FIVE years to meet Scottish business demand. But industry has a problem. Young people have been turned off by the sector. So now it's all out to start ringing the changes.

In collaboration with eSkills where the graphics  (left ) would turn many OFF and leads to above right! Try instead ePlacement Scotland which is really almost tempting!]

Scottish Government, and major Scottish employers: Adobe, Amazon, Apple, BBC, British Airways BT, Cisco, Civic Computing, Electronic Arts, Facebook, Google, IBM, IFB, Infosys, iomart, ITV, KAL Last.fm, Lastminute.com, Logica, Microsoft, Mind Candy, MOO, MySpace, Network Rail, Oracle, Plain Lazy, Sainsbury's, Sony, Sopra Group, Standard Life are all behind the BigAmbition Scotland. (Leaves you wondering a bit whatever happened to the last six letter named companies in Scotland, like maybe Unilever in the T-Z section?)

"The digital technology sector is a really exciting place to work, offering a flexible working environment, highly paid roles and the opportunity to travel," points out Polly Purvis, executive director of the Scottish trade body ScotlandIS. " However, school pupils and students are generally unaware of the opportunities the industry offers, and unless we address this there is a very real danger that Scotland will not have the necessary skills to sustain growth in the technology-driven markets of the future."

Those with ambition could do worse than look at ScotlandIs own website and have a look at some of the members like Elonics  semiconductors , Eaglewood enterprise training business software Robert M Donaldson Ltd  uninterruptible power supplies and cooling for server rooms and data centre constructions,  FreeAgent Scotland's really bright approach to accountancy or Raving Mad About  consultancy and bespoke work, based in Crieff.

The BigAmbition's best-kept secret
What no-one ever tells you early enough about the matter of IT is that where once IT was an obscure and tricky discipline,  it has now become quite a bit easier to handle and it now actually exists as the ultimate passport to anything you passionately want to do and anywhere you really want to travel.

Fancy fashion? IT lurks behind cutting and patterning. Thinking of food? Without IT your tills and menus are out of the window. Want to design? You'll need to know CAD software. Work in the US, Australia or Canada? IT will probably get you there, and with Mandarin you might even make it to China.

Your only real problem is going to be deciding which of the enormous range of options available are you going to pick?  Happy ambitioning.  Like the joke says "Mo got the hardship grant to attend University!"
