Broadband around the UK could be improved by following the strategy implemented in Scotland, says enterprise minister Jim Mather. His claims, reported in Computer Weekly, is based in the collaborative efforts between regional development agencies and local government bodies to provide high-speed broadband throughout Scotland.

He explained that America and Canada had already proven that "by targeting specific areas, you actually improve broadband access faster".

The report also highlighted the £3.5m contract which is set to be awarded next month to a company, with the aim of providing broadband to the 1% of Scotland still without access by the end of the year.

However, the BBC reported earlier in 2008 that plans to extend wireless broadband to the Western Isle of Barra were met with opposition, as residents argued they would rather telephone exchanges were updated. The complaints are being dealt with by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which backs the Connected Communities scheme.
