The University of Leicester Business Assistance Group, G-STEP, recently showcased innovative new technologies in G-STEP’s Business Meets Space event at the National Space Centre in Leicester in is using data from space to help regional businesses gain a competitive edge.

G-Step was set up in 2009 to support business and public sector organisations in the use of Earth Observation information technology that could change their operations and competitiveness.

One leading small company G-STEP’s geo-information data specialist, Dr Kavitha Muthu,(right)has been working with is SoilCycle which specialises in land restoration and soil improvement.

In partnership, G-Step and SoilCycle have transported the company’s mapping capacity from traditional paper mapping to bespoke Geographical Information System (GIS) software.

Dr Muthu explained:  “The adoption of electronic mapping allows SoilCycle to update site information with ease, and enables the company to supply maps to their clients in near real time.

“Satellite imagery has been incorporated into this mapping process and the application of such technology allows site evaluation to be carried out without leaving the office!”

Dr. Muthu also worked with Rock Kitchen Harris, a  Leicester agency specialising in advertising, PR, media, web design and online marketing.

The company closely with every police force in England and Wales on behalf of the Home Office, to produce street level crime statistics for the UK.The adoption of GIS software to produce crime statistics has replaced computer-coding methods, leading to dramatic increases in processing speed.

The work has allowed data to be both visualised and interrogated, enabling users to obtain local and regional crime statistics. This  allows Rock Kitchen Harris to deliver enhanced capability to their clients.

G-STEP is part funded by  ERDF, Prospect Leicestershire and University of Leicester.
