Sixth Sense – Advanced Sensor Technology

08/02/2012, 08:15

Edinburgh Conference Centre

Sensing for security; sensitive measurements in extreme environments; from data to information; and biomedical sensing are among the topics covered at Heriot-Watt University's 2nd annual Industry Day welcoming the views of those working in this sector, and those who wish to discuss the important issues currently facing the industry.

This all-day event is targeted at those working in:

  • surveillance & security
  • medical imaging
  • machine vision
  • defence
  • condition monitoring and preventative maintenance
  • production monitoring
  • manufacturing and process control
  • intelligent transport

Topics will be led by an industry speaker, followed by in-depth discussion and case studies by Heriot-Watt academics on state-of-the-art technology.
Delegate spaces are free, but limited.  Contact

Confirmed speakers:

Dan Georgi, Baker Hughes
Keynote speaker, Dan is a Baker Hughes Technology Fellow working in the technology portfolio management team in Houston, Texas. With over 25+ years experience in the oil industry, Dan has been involved in tool development, interpretation development, core-log integration, and reservoir evaluation of conventional, fractured, and heavy oil reservoirs. He has also been director of Baker Hughes’ strategic technology and advanced research group that focused on technology development.

Robert Lamb, SELEX Galileo
Robert is Chief Technologist for SELEX Galileo’s electro-optics. He is also an honorary Professor of physics at Heriot-Watt University. His research interests focus on nonlinear optics and lasers for active imaging, electro-optical and directional infrared countermeasures, and ultralow-light sensing using photon counting for range finding. Robert will talk in the “Sensing for Security” session.

Phil Nash, Stingray Geophysical
Phil has 25 years’ experience of fibre-optic sensor development, beginning with deployment in 1986 of the world’s first seabed optical hydrophone array while working for Marconi. He later held various positions in UK defence research laboratories and QinetiQ, where he pioneered the use of fibre-optic acoustic technology for non-defence applications such as seabed seismic. Phil talks in “Sensitive Measurements in Extreme environments” session.

Scott Reed, SeeByte
Scott is Head of Engineering at SeeByte. Scott drives SeeByte's ever-growing engineering group, and is responsible for the delivery of SeeByte's engineering solutions, for monitoring quality assurance and ensuring SeeByte's engineering group fulfils their technical, sales, support and training requirements.
Scott talks  “From Data to Information” session.

Murdo Black, Axis Shield
Murdo is the Director of Research & Development at Axis Shield, an innovative Anglo-Norwegian company focused on the development and manufacture of important in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests for use in clinical laboratories and at the point of care. Previous to this, Murdo worked as R&D director at Hypoguard. Murdo stars in “Biomedical Sensing.”
