More than 50 companies are at the core of the Scottish photonics sector. Their economic impact is substantial with GVA per employee at £65,000. Most of them were at the Scottish Photonics meeting that astutely teamed with Fraunhofer Centre for Applied Photonics UK, where Technology Scotland, partnered with the Scottish Optoelectronics Association, Innovate UK and HGF intellectual property specialists to considered future growth and expansion of this discretely high-powered sector.

Scottish Photonics turnover is around £740 million per annum, with £380million exported. The sector employs 3,500 people primarily in high, value-addded jobs where R&D investment is around £40million yearly in industrial R&D, adding some £230million gross value yearly to Scotland's economy.

The next Technology Scotland meet is on May 11where  focus will be on the Scottish Whisky Experience and industry experts and peers discuss how optoelectronics can address the Global Counterfeiting Challenge. Since the OECD now estimates  overall cost of counterfeiting of global trade at around 5-7%, over a trillion dollars in lost revenue, The meeting is  9:30am -2.30pm.The interested should email (right) Emma Dixon
