
In The Times World University Rankings 2011-2012 for Scotland, Edinburgh is among the top player at 36th position, St Andrews having slipped back down to 85, while Glasgow and Aberdeen are outside the top 100, ranking at 102 and 151 respectively. Back in 2010- 2011 with only the UK considered, St Andrews topped Edinburgh and Glasgow. But Universities now ranked globally have Asia making a fine showing.
University of Tokyo (30) Hong Kong (34) and Singapore (40), are followed by Peking (49) and Kyoto (52) Korea's Pohang (53) with Hong Kong Universities of Science and Technology, China's Tsinghua University (71) and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (94) are all in the top 100 ranks.
On subject strengths , engineering and technology subjects shows Asia making its strongest showing with 10 institutions in the top 50 (compared with only six from mainland Europe.) The UK offers Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial in the top 10 with UCL and Manchester in the top 50.
