The Strathearn Environs & Royal Forteviot (SERF) project, a long-term study of a remarkable landscape at the heart of Scotland in Strathearn, seeks to explore the early prehistoric origins of the Pictish royal centre at Forteviot and document the area’s subsequent evolution. A Highland firm has failed to find new staff as unemployment nears two million. Which either goes to show that the UK workers have lost their mobility, or that HCM's advertising is not correctly targeted. Highland Heating Management has no website and no easily reached email, though it does have area local directory listings, so they have turned to Tartan Silk publicity to help them out. Perhaps Tartan Silk should move into the lucrative job recruitment market.

Attempts to impose collaboration on Scottish public services looks to be loosing ground. Disagreement between three local authorities has underlined the inadequacy of Scotland's council framework and sparked calls for reform. Inverclyde, West Dunbartonshire and Perth & Kinross Councils had planned to work together on a tender for computer systems to manage HR and staff payrolls but talks fell apart when negotiators failed to agree on their requirements. The collaborative, cost-cutting IT project, descended into petty feuding and legal disputes, actually sending the cost of the projects soaring.

Rail passengers in Scotland face growing disruption following a sudden rise in the theft of copper cables from railway lines, since soaring global prices for metals, fuelled by growing demand from China, has triggered a surge in metal thefts from Scotland's railway lines. Perhaps the railways should take a leaf out of the Gauteng Soweto development in South Africa, which receives a business boost with a R1bn investment by shared broadband infrastructure company, Dark Fibre Africa (DFA), to lay fibre in the township.
