The Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) tug support for The Minch, the west coast and the Western Isles was withdrawn from service on cost grounds by the UK government. But ForArgyll records that a cargo boat grounded 10.45pm on 19th March on an island off North Uist highlights the very urgent need for ETV protection to be reinstated.

The Westminster government recently extended by three months the temporary contract for the two coastguard tugs stationed in the Western and Northern Isle, reports ForArgyll. It did so, while announcing from the end of this contract that the oil and gas industry agreed to provide coverage from its own ‘vessels’

Wave energy company Aquamarine Power has received £7m in new funding and commitment for further investment from existing shareholders by 2014 for the commercialisation of its Oyster technology. The news came from First Minister Alex Salmond during his opening address in Edinburgh at the Scottish Low Carbon Investment Conference.

Reprieve of the coastguard stations at Stornoway in the Western Isles and Kirkwall in Orkney has not reprieved the tugs - the Emergency Towing Vessels (ETVs) based in those waters and due to be axed at the end of the month.

The proposed modernisation of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency will only require 48 coastguards, located at two national networked centres and five substations. Improved radio, Cloud computing and virtual reality will do the rest. Let's hope Chevron drills safely.

Pelamis and Aquamarine Power with their respective partners have been granted development rights to four major offshore wave energy project sites. Three off the north coast of Scotland will be home for Pelamis, while an area of the seabed of the coast of Orkney will be the oyster bed for Aquamarine Power.

Believed to be one of the largest genetics studies ever an international team of 174 research centres has identified 13 new gene variants associated with blood glucose and insulin, with five linked to Type-2 diabetes. Wave energy developer Aquamarine Power has received a major funding boost securing £5.1m of public funding to support its second generation wave energy device, Oyster 2, to be manufactured later this year for testing at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney (EMEC) in 2011.
