No riots here - cross fingers

Tuesday 9th August 2011
Though we can't be sure what the fish are up to!

As the fourth day of London riots, with a spread to Birmingham, damages Britain's tourism potential, by being the worst since the race riots of the '80's, it is time for the Scottish Tourist board to take advantage perhaps to energetically promote Scotland as a place to visit, where at the worst (cross fingers) we have to endure football hooliganism, some Glasgow gang knife crime too, although Edinburgh gun crime is reported dropping.

It is also time to pull out all the stops in trying to find the root cause behind the London events in order to
re-establishing the UK as a place to visit. Perhaps 24 hour news coverage of the actual destruction inflicted is not the best PR route to image or solution of the problem. Certainly being forced to cancel the Soccer League Cup game slides the chaos into a deeper and worse framework.

Britain’s image as a tourist destination after four days of rioting, is likely to cause considerable impact on the 2012 Olympic Games, now facing a publicity challenge to overcome the riots damage that hit world headlines.

Travel Mole reports Mary Rance, CEO UKInbound, saying: "The Riots of the past few days, particularly in London, are most unfortunate for the global image of the UK – and not just ahead of the Olympics but for the country’s short term and long term inbound tourism industry.

"With scenes of looting, violence and lawlessness flashing across TV screens across the globe it is absolutely vital that the Government and its agencies, as well as the UK tourism industry, work hard to put things in context."

The problem is that no convincing context has as yet been advance.
