Back in January research led by Michelle Wang of Cornell University involved the 'unzipping' of single DNA molecules to gain new insight into how genes are packed and expressed within a cell. Now Professor William Earnshaw at university of Edinburgh leads research that builds a clearer picture of how lengthy strands of DNA are concertinaed when cells grow and divide, in a discovery could help explain how cell renewal can go wrong.

IQE, the Cardiff headquartered, global supplier of wafer products and services to the semiconductor industry reports its interim results for the half year (1H) ended June 2010 showing a strong performance in all main markets with wireless up 52%, optoelectronics up 55% and electronics up 102%.

Hot on the heels of better gallium and nanowire solar cells in Germany, Texas Tech University scientists have developed an indium gallium nitride (InGaN) solar cell with characteristics ‘significantly higher’ than previously reported values for devices with similar indium content in the QWs. But in Spain,research has focused on photoactive compounds to improve the solar cell glass.
