The great disc storage software space race

Hewlett-Packard Co has taken data storage provider 3Par Inc after an 18-day war with Dell, which is likely to continue looking and shopping for its own storage strategic acquisitions such as EMC Corp.

HP is to pay $33 a share, or $2.35bn. Dell with its $72m breakup fee from 3Par, is scouting for companies to help it move into higher-margin products, including storage, technology services, networking and software.

EMC, IBM and Hitachi Ltd are in a $19bn market for external disk drives, where the runners-up listed include Pillar Data Systems Ltd, Xiotech Corp, Compellent Technologies Inc, Isilon Systems Inc and CommVault Systems Inc, maker of data-management software.
