IT in the NHS

Opening address by (above) Dr Charles Gutteridge, National Clinical director for Informatics, Department of Health,the planned sessions focus on: commissioning IT in the NHS – localised commissioning, competition and national standards; the role of IT and innovation in promoting efficiency and meeting the ‘Nicholson challenge’; data protection, privacy and access; and he future for NHS IT in the new look NHS.

Sessions will explore the localisation, commissioning and delivery of information technologies in the NHS in light of the restructuring of the National Programme for IT. Delegates will also have the opportunity to discuss challenges to commissioning at a time of budget constraint, patient involvement in their records and opportunities for competition within IT provision. Further sessions will examine issues surrounding patient data in light of the Prime Minister’s announcement that private medical companies will be allowed anonymised NHS data to encourage innovation and benefit medical research.
