Set up in 2005, Indigo has used its R&D capability to develop a unique computer network for management of extraordinarily large amounts of data, such as those used by oil and gas reservoir characterisation specialists. Its success encouraged Indigo to enter the AGCC Northern Star award, and has been short-listed for the award in the Commitment to Research and Development category.
‘We are delighted to be in the top three companies in the R&D category at this year’s Northern Star award finals," said Indigo director Dave Senior. "We are a small business but it is our policy to provide state of the art technologies to keep our clients ahead of the IT market, both off-the-shelf and custom-developed. We also ensure that we constantly keep abreast of new technologies ourselves for the benefit of our clients.
"Indigo identified a client that needed a staggering 3TB (3m MB) of storage with high-speed access for a key international reservoir project, and realised that this kind of computing power was just not available commercially.
"We used our R&D programme to develop and build a system that would give our client the exceptional amount of processing power and accessibility they needed," says Senior, "and we knew that we wanted to ‘future-proof’ the system so it would grow as the company grows. Our success with this demanding and technical project spurred us on to enter the Northern Star award for Commitment to Research and Development."
This year’s award event on 25 September is the biggest yet and the Indigo table will be anxiously awaiting the announcement of the final winner. "We won’t mind too much if we don’t win the award itself," reflects Senior, "because we are very proud to have made it to the top three, but we will be really elated if we are the final winners.
"Our main R&D focus for our energy sector clients is in the area of high-speed, high-density storage technology to provide the backend infrastructure to support demanding software applications - such as geological and seismic data processing and interpretation. This means considerable ongoing investment by Indigo in its own hardware, software, R&D and staff training, which we are committed to. And to be short-listed is a real tribute to the success of our R&D effort.
