The 115 year old Arduaine Garden, threatened with closure by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) earlier this year, has won a 12-month reprieve after a sustained campaign by local supporters of the Kilmelford site which holds the widest range of rhododendrons in the UK, including rare species from across the world brought back by botanist George Forrest.

Now, working in partnership with a local hotel and its own 100-strong support group, the garden now looks as if it is on the path to safety having entered into joint-working arrangements with the nearby Loch Melfort Hotel and also receiving valuable help from the recently established Arduaine Garden Support Group (AGSG).

Under the new arrangements, the hotel can provide admission services to visitors. The hotel is also working in partnership with the garden to hold events that will increase awareness and revenue at Arduaine.

The 122–strong AGSG have played an important role in promoting the garden locally, raising the profile and working to increase visitor numbers.  Both of these relationships have helped to improve the financial prospects for the garden, which had been facing an uncertain future earlier in 2009.

The NTS  will now continue with plans to raise funds for a substantial endowment to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the garden. Progress towards to be reviewed again in 2012.
