A Faroe Isles student Jakup Emil Hansen did some intensive mathematical research to highlighted a flaw in Fifa rankings and ensured that the Faroes were placed above Wales . The two nations appear to be almost neck and neck for the last place in pot five of seeds for Brazil 2014, meaning the other will be condemned to joining Andorra, San Marino and Kazakhstan minnows

The meticulous calculations of the 28-year-old political science student Hansen, reports Wales Online, highlights that the Faroes should be 0.07 points better off than Wales in the complicated ratings. He contacted the Faroe Isles FA, who in turn spoke to Fifa, who in turn have changed the rankings .

Hansen said he started looking at this after the Faroe Islands’ magnificent recent win over Estonia
"Look, I know Wales are the better team. They have Premier stars in their side, we have players who are part-time. If Wales played the Faroe Islands tomorrow they would almost certainly win, I know that. They will go above us again, I’m certain of it."

He continued: "I had my computer at home and the calculator on it. I am a big fan of the BBC’s Panorama program, which has done so much to expose the corruption in football and, when I started to do my calculations, it seemed to me FIFA were wrong.

“I ...found a blogger from Romania who also calculates these things and his sums were identical as mine.  It took me five hours to do the calculations, which really aren’t that difficult once you know the system FIFA use, but it took weeks to get anything done about it."
