
Admitted to the RSE, Fellows are encouraged to contribute to the aims and objectives of the Society, including the provision of expert policy advice to Government and Parliament, outreach education programmes for young people, and public engagement events including conferences
and discussion forums.

Lord Turner, (left) a successful businessman who has had landmark impacts on public policy informed by his active commitment to policy-relevant social science. His appointment to the FSA at a time of financial sector crisis underlines the esteem in which he is held.
Friedrich Hirzebruch (right) Honorary Fellow Emeritus Professor of
Mathematics, Max Planck Institute for Mathematics, Bonn, is the pre-eminent German mathematician of his time and was instrumental in building up German mathematics after WWII. He helped to unify mathematics by his own work and that of the conferences and institute that he established.
Edinburgh-born Angus Deaton, Corresponding Fellow, (left) is the Dwight D Eisenhower Professor of International Affairs & Professor of Economics and International Affairs, Princeton University. President of the American Economic Association, is one of the world’s leading developmental economists and a senior adviser to the World Bank.

Jack Satsangi ( left) – Professor of Gastroenterology, University of Edinburgh and a national and international leader in inflammatory bowel disease responsible for the earliest and most recent breakthroughs identifying genetic risk factors for Crohn’s disease.

Neva Haites – (right) OBE, Professor of Medical GeneticsUniversity of Aberdeen’s first woman; Vice-Principal & Head of College of Life Sciences and Medicine, and one of Scotland’s leading scientists in Human genetics with a particular interest in inherited predispositions to cancer.
Victoria Crowe OBE – (left) a distinguished Scottish Artist exhibiting regularly at major galleries whose work hangs in many significant royal, public and private collections.
Archibald Bethel – (right) CBE, widely recognised for his role in Scottish Engineering as a leader/manager at the very highest level whose leadership of Babcock Marine division, Babcock International Group Plc has resulted in the company winning major projects for this country and abroad.
Andrew Waters – (left) Professor of Molecular and Developmental Parasitology, University of Glasgow a pioneering researcher who has made groundbreaking contributions to our knowledge of malaria at the molecular level.

Professors Codd and van Aalten are based within the University’s College of Life Sciences while Professor Struthers is based at the School of Medicine. Professor Maclean holds an Emeritus position within Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, part of the University.
Professor Peter Downes, (left)) Principal of the University, congratulated the new Fellows, saying, “it is perhaps no surprise that this year’s crop of new RSE Fellows come from three of the University’s strongest areas - Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Art and Design - emphasising the breadth of expertise that exists here.

Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities which fielded 11 and 8 new fellows respectively, not to mention Heriot-Watt (3) St Andrews (3) Aberdeen (2) and Strathclyde (1) did not seem to be looking to gain face from their livewires, which is a pity, as their academic profiles tend to have people pictures.
