TWO priceless collections of manuscripts, books and letters from the archives of the Catholic Church are to be housed at Aberdeen University, while The Scottish Centre for Tagore Studies (ScoTs) has opened at Napier University’s Institute of Creative Industries.

Expert business and technical analysts are to be hired in a major recruitment drive by the Scottish R&D tax credit specialist Jumpstart, that will create 40 top jobs for the cream of the UK's scientific and business talent.
£16m for UK robotics
UK research, that in Scotland includes Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Heriot-Watt Universities, is to develop smart machines that think for themselves and will receive a £16m boost thanks to a major partnership between the government and industry. This research includes safe ways of monitoring in dangerous environments, as in deep sea installations and nuclear power plants, or ‘nursebots’ that assist patients in hospitals, and aerial vehicles to monitor national borders or detect pollution.

Airports change owners
London's City and Gatwick airports owner, Global Infrastructure Partners (GPI) is buying Ferrovial-owned BAA's Edinburgh airport for £807m and becomes the lead British airport operator. Meantime Scotland's largest commercial airfield, Prestwick, purchased in 1998 by Stagecoach Group for £41m, sold January 2001 for £33.4m to New Zealand Infratil is also up for sale, together with Manston Airport, Kent.
Not such an ill wind perhaps
Blaming deteriorating confidence in the offshore wind market for its decision, Korean company Doosan is to pull out of a year old plan for a £170m excellence research centre and turbine factory in Renfrew and had informed the Scottish government and its customers four months ago.
EPSRC funds Edinburgh ICMS
The Edinburgh based International Centre for Mathematical Sciences which marks its 21st anniversary this week has received significant funding of £1.3m for four years to help the centre attract the world’s leading researchers in mathematics and related scientific fields to the UK and also showcase British research in the mathematical sciences.

Edinburgh Instruments with new monitor and photolysis spectrometry developments introduced recently to the market has appointed former Aggreko CEO Dr David Shepherd as its chairman and the company will have its equipment on show at the German Nurenberg Sensor + Test exhibition in May.
Soundscape dreamcatcher
Is it possible to influence people as they sleep and give them their perfect dream? Today sees the launch of a new study that uses a specially designed iPhone app in an attempt to improve the dreams of millions of people around the world. If successful, the study will allow people to create their perfect dream and so wake up feeling especially happy and refreshed. This study was launched at the Edinburgh International Science Festival by psychologist Professor Richard Wiseman.
Clouds and their branding
On Tuesday, customers of Lumison (one time EdNET) DediPower and Blue Square Data acquired by Bridgepoint Development Capital in 2010, now known as Pulsant is to celebrate the brand launch holding an event at the Balmoral, Edinburgh (Thursday is at OXO Tower, London). Over in Glasgow, Iomart Group take a different branding route securing Scotland football stars Charlie Mulgrew (Celtic) and Emma Fernon (Glasgow City ladies FC) to kick off the Host Your Kit campaign to give away 30 football kits to boys' and girls' teams across Britain, who for various reasons cannot afford their own or desperately need a new one.

The sale of 14.8% of the company, comes just days after Cupid revealed that Max Polyakov, its business development director, has quit to launch a social gaming business in the United States where he expects to grow the firm’s presence from three staff to about eight.
Helping mice to help humans
The five winners of the 2011 CRACK IT Challenges competition announced by the NC3Rs and funded by them, with in-kind contributions from industry sponsors AstraZeneca, Huntingdon Life Sciences, Lilly, Syngenta and Unilever. It will involve three Scottish academics, Dr Steven Webb, Dr Andrew McIntosh and Professor Judith Pratt from Strathclyde and Edinburgh Universities.

HECToR teams with BlueGene/Q
Two giant computers, HECToR and BlueGene/Q, based at the University of Edinburgh’s Advanced Computing Facility (ACF) are being launched in what marks the next chapter of the UK’s supercomputing programme. HECToR (upgraded) and BlueGene/Q facilities have roughly similar computational performances with 800 Teraflops. But HECToR has a memory of 90 Terabytes and one Petabyte of disk space for storing data.

Infographics, relocating to prestigious new offices in Westcott House, in the South Queensferry district of Edinburgh, has completed its hi-spec project with the expertise of Space Solutions Aberdeen headquartered with offices in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Livingston and one of Scotland’s larger commercial property specialists.
