The Edinburgh based International Centre for Mathematical Sciences which marks its 21st anniversary this week has received significant funding of £1.3m for four years to help the centre attract the world’s leading researchers in mathematics and related scientific fields to the UK and also showcase British research in the mathematical sciences.

Two giant computers, HECToR and BlueGene/Q, based at the University of Edinburgh’s Advanced Computing Facility (ACF) are being launched in what marks the next chapter of the UK’s supercomputing programme. HECToR (upgraded) and BlueGene/Q facilities have roughly similar computational performances with 800 Teraflops. But HECToR has a memory of 90 Terabytes and one Petabyte of disk space for storing data.
