The current Remote Impact game which won the EIG Award was developed to encourage physical activity and offer sports activities to remote family members and friends. The physical intensity of the game contributes to general fitness, weight loss and stress relief, and could even be used for rehabilitation. At the same time it allows participants to socialise and create new friendships over a distance in a fun way.

Remote Impact is the first of a number of innovations under the heading 'Sports over a Distance' being developed at Distance Lab based in Forres, Scotland, a research institute that brings together digital media technology, design and the arts to redefine and overcome the disadvantages of distance in sports, education, health care, relationships, and culture.

Distance Lab CEO, Stefan Agamanolis (right) said: "This recognition is testament to the creativity and dedication of our researcher's at the lab.  It demonstrates that we are creating innovations that can compete with the like of Nintendo and Komami.  Remote Impact has many educational applications, as well as gaming, that could help school children in remote schools to interact with other schools over a distance. "

The EIG award is promoted by the Germany's Hessian Ministry of Economics, Transport, Urban and Regional Development, and Hessen-IT, the ministry's initiative to support the areas IT industry, invites games developers, games publishers, publishing companies, freelancers, and young professionals from all EU member states to submit their proposals.

The winner of the award was Sharkworld an online event-based adventure game, where players have to manage a complicated project in Shanghai, China. The creator Ranj Serious Games, Netherlands (which in 2000 won with a game based on the work of Heronimus Bosch where the challenge is to reach heaven without sinning!) walked away with a first prize of £20,000.
