As the computer data flood reaches tsunami proportions, lots of logic to IBM acquisition of data compression technology company Storwize, expected to close in the third quarter of this year.

Co-founded by its president Gal Naor (left) and CTO Jonathan Amit (right) the Storewize technology compresses files and other types of data in real-time in multiple computing environments, IBM said, (partners included Landmark/Haliburton, NetApp, Oracle and VM Ware, but its data compression technology does not degrade systems or application performance, and creates space to store more data in IT environments.

For IBM the compression technology will help scan more historical data for analysis without the need for extra storage, which could help boost the performance of analytics applications and databases and it will help make sense of massive amounts of data in order to provide new services, said (right)  Brian Truskowski, GM of System Storage and Networking in IBM Systems and Technology Group.

Storwize's Random Access Compression Engine uses patented technology based on the industry-standard compression algorithm. IBM already offers database software including DB2 and analytics software to uncover and analyze information from multiple sources.
