Capita Group Plc acquired Glasgow-based Beat Systems Limited (BSL) for somewhere between £1m and £10m. BSL is a leading specialist provider of secure mobile data solutions where sensitive data has to be delivered securely to remote field staff.

BSL is a recognised standard for secure mobile solutions serving Police, Home Office and  Criminal Justice organisations as well as local and central Government in the UK.

In April, it set up a partnership with EADS company Cassidian to develop solutions for the Public and Emergency sector with Cassadian contributing mobile handsets and encryption technology.

BSL was set up in Glasgow by Roy Hawes, and Stephen McDermott, and astute enough to add two women stakeholders, Deborah Hawes and Julie Hynes to deliver innovative and highly secure mobile solutions using the latest mobile and wireless technology.

Working with police national technology organisations in the UK, Beat Systems is also acknowledged successful in delivering mobile solutions over TETRA Airwave and GPRS.

Alongside Capita’s December acquisition of SunGard Public Sector UK, now Capita Secure Information Systems, this acquisition brings new market opportunities particularly in outsourced services to police authorities and Home Office criminal justice organisations.

BSL’s largest clients count Nottinghamshire, Cleveland Lincolnshire and British Transport Police.  The company has developed innovative mobile technology for police forces and other public sector clients.

Andy Parker, joint chief operating officer of the Capita Group says:  “This acquisition will adds both innovation and breadth of solution to our secure information systems for police forces, introducing new customers and opening up new markets for the wider Capita Group.

"This is a key new area for Capita and, given the cuts in funding which the sector faces, one which provides real opportunities for the Group to drive down costs, improve customer services and add value."

BSL has around 30 employees, mainly based in Glasgow and will become part of Capita’s Secure Information Services Business. Capita already has around 90 staff working in the Glasgow office with Capita Life and Pensions, which employs more than 9,000 people across the UK.
