Last week more than 55,000 people across south west Scotland found themselves without a landline phone service as the lines across the region and in Ayrshire went down for four hours due to a computer fault at a BT office in Glasgow.

Businesses and households suffered from the telecoms blackout from 10am to 2pm and even emergency services also experienced problems with some 999 calls failing to get through.

MP Russell Brown said: "It is hugely worrying that what appears to be a simple processing problem with a computer in Glasgow can bring such worry to Dumfries. "I am seeking commitments from BT that lessons will be learned from this fault to ensure this never happens again.

"We cannot be in a position where so many people are unable to contact GP surgeries and hospitals and other emergency services."

A BT spokesman said: "The fault was caused by corrupted data (in a computer) in Glasgow. Phone lines were restored at 1.45pm."

Thank heaven for mobiles and alternate providers!
