Dundee gaming company CobraMobile has bolstered its growing reputation with the production of a mobile phone game based on the iconic and much loved Guinness World Records Book. Working with TT Games Publishing and mobile media publishers Player X, Cobra Guinness World Records Mobile is released this month across all major UK and European carriers including T-Mobile, Vodaphone, Telefonica, O2 and Orange.

Boasting cutting edge graphics and superb playability, the mobile mini-game features six challenges all based on existing world records which players attempt to better.  A seventh challenge is also up for grabs by entering a code available to players when they purchase ‘Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2008’.

Each of the six mini games on Guinness World Records Mobile feature a helpful avatar who guides players through the record attempts and informs them whether or not they’ve been successful.  For each challenge the existing world record is recorded at the top of the screen, while the player’s progress is listed below.

Cobra’s Guinness World Records game includes:

Text Challenge: where players have to enter a difficult text message in an attempt to beat the timing set by record holder Ben Cook in 2007 (Record info: Ben Cook (USA) typed a prescribed 160-character text on his mobile phone in 42.22 sec.)
Pogo Stick: Through timing button pushes, players bounce (on a virtual pogo stick) along a race track in a bid to reach the finishing line ahead of the record time. (Record info Ashrita Furman of Jamaica, New York, USA travelled the fastest mile on a pogo stick in 12 min 16 sec at Iffley Field, Oxford, UK on 24 July 2001)
Melon Splitter: Where melons slide along a conveyor belt and players hit  two keys to crush the fruit and beat John Allwood’s record of breaking 40 – in a minute – with his head
Sheep Shearer: Involves hitting (`shearing’) sheep as they pass on screen by pressing buttons on the keypad  (Record info: The fastest time to shear a single sheep is 45.41 seconds, recorded by Dwayne Black (Australia) on the set of Guinness World Records at Seven Network Studios, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on 17 April 2005.)
Tight Rope: Players hit two keys on their phone to guide the avatar across a shaky tightrope (Record info: Philippe Petit of France holds the World Record for the highest tight rope walk, having crossed between the towers of the World Trade Centre at a height of 411m)
Strong Man: Players attempt to beat the current world record for tearing up ‘phone books. This is done via a cursor at the bottom of the screen which sweeps back and forward with players trying to stop it dead centre. (Record info: As of 14/09/2007, Ed Shelton of the USA holds the World Record having ripped 55 phone directories from top to bottom in 3 minutes)

Commenting on the imminent release of the Guinness World Records game, Cobra’s MD Mark Ettle said: “To be associated with Guinness World Records is another great accolade for Cobra, given its standing as a long running British institution. The game itself is superb, and is a creating a great buzz in gaming circles with some first rate feedback coming through already.

“With this product, we’ve again proved what a creative company like ours can offer and in the process we’ve also showcased Dundee as a world leading centre of excellence in the global gaming sector.”

Cobra’s Chairman, Peter Mackintosh added: “With Guinness World Records we’ve again shown our credentials as an international player in the mobile gaming marketplace. The company is going from strength to strength and we’re very proud of the team here and the sterling work that’s being done.’’

The Production of the Guinness World Records follows Cobra’s recent work with TT Games on mobile games based on this summer’s blockbusters Batman and Indiana Jones.

The firm also recently signed a licensing deal to have its products distributed across the three biggest mobile phone networks in Japan as well as having its own original mobile game IP now penetrating the US market. Cobra will shortly be announcing six more major deals for its original gaming content in 2008.
