A new drop in centre to help migrants living in Shetland feel more at home opens this week in Lerwicks town centre. he Shetland Welcome Point is designed to help people for whom English is not their first language to meet up, get advice, practice English, access computers and the internet.

The idea came from research by Shetland Islands Council which showed immigrants often ended up feeling isolated and needed more help finding their feet on island soil.

The centre will be open on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8pm and on Sunday afternoons from 2 to 5pm at 4 Pitt Lane. This Thursday’s opening will include a light buffet and refreshments.

The council is looking for volunteers to help run the project and share their knowledge of what happens in Shetland. Anyone interested in supporting the venture can contact Nati Aldazabal at Lerwick’s Old Library Centre or call on 01595 743 88
