Sage accounts and business seminars

Structural Geology, models, sparse data, and fractures

Caroline Melville, who four years ago launched and runs Virtually Sorted, a Glasgow-based personal assistant service has been nominated in the Management Support Fellowship Awards - a competition normally reserved for real PAs.
Edinburgh and Strathclyde engineers scores two Advance Grants
The European Research Council (ERC) has released details of the first round of recipients of its Advanced Grants in the physical sciences and engineering fields. Some 105 of the almost 1,000 applicants from these disciplines have been allocated funding. The physical sciences and engineering grant recipients will be carrying out research in a diverse range of fields, the host institutions are located in 19 countries in the EU and countries which have signed up to the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Of the 19 UK winners, both Edinburgh and Strathclyde Universities scooped a funding award, in molecular and space engineering respectively.
Computers to help archaeology and craft tracking early Mediterranean networks
A University of Leicester-led project, in partnership with the Universities of Glasgow and Exeter, combining archaeology and computer science has received £1.75m from the Leverhulme Trust for a major programme of research linking the ancient archaeological past with the development of a new paradigm for future global computing environments. Tracing Networks : Craft Traditions in the Ancient Mediterranean and Beyond, received the award under the theme of ‘Networks’.

Labour’s efforts to canvass support apparently have been hampered by crippling computer problems. Software imported from England was unable to recognise twin-number Scottish tenement addresses, leaving campaign organisers to record voting intentions manually. The computer program recorded tenements on the wrong streets or missed them out altogether. Other problems included the occupants of whole blocks recorded as living in one flat.
After much talent drain, Herald looses its editor
Charles McGhee became Herald editor in January two years ago, and is leaving after ten years at the Herald group of newspapers, having edited sister title, the Evening Times, for six years and been consultant editor for the launch of the Sunday Herald between 1998 and 1999.
McLaughlin heads Cisco, Scotland: telecommuting Thomson moves worldwide
Donald McLaughlin has been appointed to lead networking giant Cisco in Scotland at the start of its financial years July 28. McLaughlin, with 20 years of experience in the technology industry, joined Cisco in 1999 as an account manager in software sales. He then progressed into a management role, leading the UK Contact Centre Solutions team within Business Development. Aged 43, he replaces Gordon Thomson, who now takes on a new role as director of sales strategy and plannning in the worldwide sales strategy and planning unit.

Hamilton College appoints its acting principal to principal
Margaret Clarke has been promoted from acting principal to the new principal of Hamilton College. Prior to joining in August 2006 she held several education sector senior posts. A mathematics teacherin Dundee in 1978, she subsequently added a teaching qualification in computing to her CV in 1983. Over the next 20 years, she was involved in developing new material and courses with the Scottish CCC, Scottish Examinations Board, and latterly with the SQA.
MoD signs £3bn aircraft carriers contract
The MoD has signed contracts with industry to build the two future aircraft carriers (CVF). The contracts in the region of £3bn, were signed with the newly-formed British shipbuilding company BVT Surface Fleet and the Aircraft Carrier Alliance onboard HMS Ark Royal. Glasgow-based Thales secured £425m for design and engineering; BVT Surface Fleet secured £1.325m for construction of both ships at Govan and Portsmouth; Babcock Marine taking £675m for bow section and final assembly at Rosyth; BAE System has £300m for construction at Barrow-in-Furness yards and BAE Systems INSYTE has £275m for design and supply of mission systems.
Pyrrho Database Management System
Pyrrho is a compact and efficient relational database management system for the .NET framework. It supports the SQL2003 standard including advanced OLAP functions, and the free edition works for database files up to 8MB in size. The server has a 500KB footprint, so will run successfully on .NET enabled PDAs and mobile phones. Despite its small size it is scalable and efficient. It has been tested on high-volume scenarios, where it significantly outperforms existing commercial products, and the DataCenter edition is designed for supercomputing clusters.
Braveheart cornerstones £42m on Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and Strathclyde
Braveheart, the technology commercialisation and investment management company has signed an agreement with the University of Aberdeen. it follows hot on the heels of the Perth based investment company tie-up with Edinburgh University in June 2007 creating a dedicated £25m fund having rights of first refusal to invest in all commercial investment opportunities that arise in respect of companies and intellectual property emanating from the university, other than in the field of medicine, veterinary medicine and life sciences, where it may take a co-investment position. In February 2007 a £12m funding deal for the Strathclyde Innovation Fund partnership with Strathclyde University shared 25% of its performance bonus with the university. In addition, when an investment is made, a payment will be made to the department which has sponsored the investment opportunity, encouraging university departments to participate in the commercialisation partnership.

Amanda Lafferty put the Interprise Suite through its paces at an Edinburgh launch by Glasgow based Turnkey Computer Technology. Her phrase seems to sum it up. This accounting software suite, (which looks like giving SAGE a run for its money, has solved issues such as COGS, FIFO, and multicurrency) offers a pre-set company set-up in the provision of ERP/CRM/Accounting.
