SolidWorks scoops Glasgow University mechanical engineers
University of Glasgow mechanical engineering students will hone their 3D CAD skills designing everything from race cars to bridges using SolidWorks education edition software as they prepare for professional careers.
The University of Glasgow was the first in the UK to hire a professor of engineering, and to create a focused engineering department. After evaluating leading CAD packages, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the university has currently standardised on 200 licenses of SolidWorks software. The department, in conjunction with the Glasgow School of Art, will begin teaching SolidWorks 3D CAD and SolidWorks Simulation design validation software in the Product Design Engineering degree program next autumn.
“The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught degree programs that impose a wide and challenging range of demands on the 3D CAD software used by the students,” said Dr. Graham Green, senior lecturer in engineering design, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Glasgow. “An additional challenge is provided by the needs of students taking our joint course in Product Design Engineering, taught in conjunction with the Glasgow School of Art.”
Taking the coursework strain
SolidWorks education edition will give University of Glasgow graduate and undergraduate students a hands-on product development experience that exposes them to concept innovation through design to prototyping and testing. The department will use SolidWorks Education edition’s pre-packaged coursework, curriculum and student certification platform to support everything from lesson planning to assessment.
“Though steeped in tradition, the University of Glasgow has a progressive approach to incorporating cutting-edge tools in its curricula,” said Marie Planchard, director of worldwide education markets at SolidWorks Corporation. “Teaching SolidWorks and SolidWorks Simulation effectively gives students an advantage when applying for engineering jobs.”
The University of Glasgow relies on authorised SolidWorks reseller TMS CADCentre (which also supplies COSMOSWorks and PDMWorks, based in Larbert and Aberdeen, for ongoing software training, implementation, and support.
