Data service centre looks for West Scotland location

Scolocate, the data centre service business set up and 89% owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland anticipates doubling turnover in the next four years and is looking to the West of Scotland as a potential future site. It currently provides over 44,000 square feet of high security colocation space, coupled with office accommodation and secure storage areas for documents, equipment and data and during 2006-2007 booked sales of £4.5m.

Scolocate MD, Roy Maxwell is reported as keen to grow the operation as demand for high-security "co-location" space grows. "We want to expand the business within Scotland and would like a location in the west," he is reported saying, adding that this depends on the right facility being available.

"Even though our customers can be located anywhere, there are still many that like to be relatively close to the heart of their systems. We have to plan capacity wise. At some stage in the next couple of years we will hit the space barrier."

Scolocate was ranked as the eighth-fastest-growing technology company in Scotland in the  Deloitte Fast 500 for 2007.   Although new-build remains an option for an additional facility, moving into an existing building is believed  preferable.

Demand for remote hosting of internet equipment and computer services has mushroomed with security and power-outage concerns and from new legislation demanding e-mails be kept for at least seven years.

Over the past 18 months, the company has invested some £1.8m on generators and additional cooling equipment, though it claims to take that electricity from renewable sources.
