Two years ago, Internet Villages International (IVI) announced plans to build the world's first green powered Data Farm on the outskirts of Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire, Scotland consist ing of approximately 20 Data Centres. Now a new scheme is being aired to harness tidal power to power a "cloud-computing" data centre near Ecclefechan (best known for its famous cakes) in Dumfries and Galloway. Internet Villages International (IVI), are again behind the proposed data centre, but has now joined with marine turbine developers, Atlantis Resources.

IVI had already formed a strategic alliance with Singapore-based Atlantis to build a "blue data centre" in Caithness, designed to exploit marine energy" in the Pentland Firth. Now investigations are in hand into the feasibility of powering the proposed 250-acre Alba 1 data farm using Solway Firth tide power.

IVI chairman, Peter Hewkin said: "This alliance will cement the position of IVI and Atlantis as world leaders in their respective fields. Our relationship will act as an enabler for a 'green rush' as the data centre industry moves to Scotland."

Plans for the £1.2bn Ecclefechan scheme potentially the world's largest - are said to be gathering momentum, with IVI's planning application due to be lodged with Dumfries and Galloway Council in the spring.
