The Financial Times has been mulling over the potential clutch of developers of ‘green’ data centres in Scotland, including Lockerbie Data Centres awaiting planning approval, Internet Villages International angling for a data farm in Ecclelfechen and also part of the Antlantis consortium in Caithness, awaiting a Crown Estates license which should hear about in September.

That's the month that the Onyx Group, will officially be opening its second £5m datacentre, half a mile away from its new workplace recovery centre in South Gyle, which opened in April.

It is reported  that it expects to add £10m to its turnover with Scottish Equitable owners, Aegon the Dutch insurance and pensions group being the first client to sign up for the new centre.

Neil Stephenson, (right) Onyx Group CEO said: “This is a significant investment for the Onyx Group which will build on our existing data centre in Glasgow and workplace recovery centres in Edinburgh and Glasgow.”

“The new datacentre is a standalone, purpose-built facility and will have full ISO 27001 information security accreditation. It will link to our leading data centre in Glasgow, giving our clients the opportunity to store their data in two facilities in order to ensure full resilience.

"It is one of our biggest data centres – providing 650 racks for data storage over two floors. As well as buying storage space across the main data floors, customers will also be able to have bespoke solutions created specifically for their needs, including exclusive access to private data suites.”

The Group has drawn on a grant from Scottish Enterprise to open the facility and is looking to recruit engineers to work in the new centre.  The company, which acquired Campbell Lee and Edinburgh-based Dundas IT last year, has quadrupled its turnover from  £3m to £12m over the past two years

In addition to data centres and workplace recovery, the Group provides managed services and networking to over 3,000 UK customers from its bases in Scotland and two data centres and a second workplace centre in North East England, along with a further base in Slough.
