This year's BSA Global Software Piracy Study marks the first time a large sample of computer users around the world have been asked directly, "How often do you acquire pirated software or software that is not fully licensed?" New cyanobacterium found
A French team have discovered a new cyanobacterium in microbialites that forms intracellular Calcium-Magnesium-Strontium-Barium carbonate inclusions, revealing an unexplored pathway for calcification. Based on phylogenetic analyses, they tentatively name this cyanobacterium Candidatus Gloeomargarita lithofaciens.

MEMS: IHS & Yole, DRIE & new China fab
Texas Instruments and Hewlett Packard Co are seen as ranking 1 and 2 MEMS suppliers by sales revenue in 2011, although both saw sales slide 4%, according to market research company IHS, which puts Bosch (up 15%) and STM (up 82%) into 3rd and 4th ranking, with 8th place microphone maker Knowles also enjoying 41% growth and Analog Devices seeing 22% giving it 9th slot. Early MEMS pioneer Freescale Semiconductor dropped out out of 2011's top ten into 11th place .

In some rare US and EU coordination, realising that smart power grids communicate, two recent marekt research reports cover the US and Europe to analyse the projected hardware installation that will bring profit to respective suppliers and perhaps consumer control. One itme the Phasor measurment unit or synchrophaser is likened to upgrading monitoring from x-ray to Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Ominous omission in most of the smart grid coverage however seems to be that of security.

Well since doing a piece on QR codes, Guberlunzie and I had a chat about security. So, I've decided to pass on a little of what we discussed, and what I know on the issue. I apologise to all PC users out there, but I use a Mac at home, ( since '88, not that loyalty shows, but I digress) and some of this won't work for you. However, a lot have PC equivalents, in some cases are better than the Mac versions I use. Its all about what you can find, for the task needed.

Chipworks, GSS & Intel's FinFET
Glasgow-based Gold Standard Simulation (GSS) has been puzzled by the shape of the latest Intel 22nm tri-gate (or try-gate?) transistors, revealed in a recent Chipworks blog. Back in 2008 both Intel and STM committed to Numonyx chalcogenide memory with Numonyx, joined byHynix and Phison in 2009 to develop NAND memory. Now a Johns Hopkins engineer team has discovered that an old kid on the block, the common memory material germanium, antimony and tellurium (GST) has an unknown property paving the way for new forms of memory drives, discs and computer systems that retain data quicker, longer and with far greater capacity than current data storage media.
Tsunami dataset tools
Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory have received part of a planned $25m grant from the DOE Office of Science to tackle the problem of extracting knowledge from massive data sets. The work is part of the DOE’s newly established Scalable Data Management, Analysis, and Visualization (SDAV) Institute. Researchers in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computing Science division will receive a planned $3.4m over five years for the research.

Chemical engineering Abertay principal
The Court of the University of Abertay Dundee has appointed Professor Nigel Seaton as new Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University. Former senior deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey and Vice-Principal of Edinburgh University. Professor Seaton takes up his appointment in August, 13 months after Bernard King, his predecessor 'retired,' leaving a hard act to follow.
