The Magnetic Resonance Center of the University Children’s Hospital Zurich achieved a world first break through in MR-guided, non-invasive neurosurgery with 10 patients having been successfully treated by means of transcranial high-intensity focused ultrasound. The non-invasive procedure opens new horizons for neurosurgery and treatment of different neurological brain disorders.

The EMRS and SEAS Defence Technologies Committees will jointly holding their annual technical conferences at which the work of two DTCs will be disseminated. at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre running in parallel.The conferences share common ticketing and organisation and a joint opening plenary session. Delegates will be able to move freely between the sessions of the two conferences choosing from among approximately 80 technical papers. The conferences include a joint exhibition, poster displays, a series of technology demonstrations, a joint networking reception and an optional conference dinner on the evening of Tuesday 7th July.

The combined IEEE conference for commerce and enterprise computing provides a platform for researchers and practitioners interested in theory and practice of technologies to be used in E-Commerce and Enterprise Computing. Opera Unite has launched a application intended to shake up the old client-server computing model of the Web, by turning your or any computer into both client and server, allowing it to interact with and serve content to other computers directly across the Web, without the need for third-party servers.

Outsourcing has been both blessing and bane for employers and workers. The current concept of Homesourcing might offer more advantages to both if Canadian-founded LiveXchange continues its growth and others follow suite. In Canada, the service has as its clients British Gas, Pizza Hut, Direct Energy and CAA, for whom Homesourcing has proven an extraordinarily successful addition to their operations.

In Germany and Spain two developments focus on technology for the eye and mimicking its sensor ability. In Spain at Granada University work is underway to replicate the retina and produced 'advanced integrated intelligent sensors' while in Germany at Fraunhofer IPMS work underway will have spectacles and its chip replacing head mounted display for interactive data use.

One of the key metrics to wind, wave and solar power is the efficiency of that power generation. Solar does not have the best of records, with an average high below 20% for traditional PV panels. Even the expensive hybrid materials route in 2008 had the US National Renewable Energy Lab recording a 40.8% efficiency for its new design triple junction cells using gallium indium phosphide (GaInP) on a gallium arsenide (GaAs) wafer. But wind power efficiencies are nowhere near their apparent generating capacities and knowledge of useful wind geographies for optimum offshore generation may also lack accuracy. Scotland needs back-up facilities.

However, former FastTrak Software Publishing CEO and Avanquest corporate director Jon Silvera has now developed and launched a reseller platform into what he believes is one of the most exciting emerging markets available.

As Scottish Enterprise is developing its £1bn Edinburgh BioQuarter life sciences complex, in the 15-year time frame for the life sciences campus, 80 workers at the Intercell factory in Livingston, have helped produce the first side-effect-free vaccine for Japanese encephalitis (JE) for some 30,000 to 50,000 annual sufferers. But Vienna-based Intercell says support offered in Scotland to its manufacturing facility "is on the lower end compared to many other European countries" and the Livingston facility may only have two more years of life. In contrast, Dr Thomas Koestler, executive VP of pharmaceutical giant Schering-Plough, is hopeful of "further investment" and commitment to its operation at Newhouse, Lanarkshire after its merger with Merck is completed later this year.
